Innovative roundabout design workflow shown at TRB Roundabout Conference
Now you can model roundabouts in 3D with real-time capacity analysis with AutoTrack® for AutoCAD® Civil 3D® linked to ARCADY 7
The latest version of AutoTrack® Junctions, featuring dynamic links to both ARCADY 7® analysis and AutoCAD® Civil 3D® was demonstrated at the recent TRB 3rd International Roundabout Conference in Carmel, Indiana, USA.
Used separately, AutoTrack® Junctions lets you design roundabouts to built-in national standards, ARCADY® lets you analyse roundabouts for capacity & delays, and AutoCAD® Civil 3D® software is a Building Information Modeling (BIM) solution for civil engineering design and documentation. But linked together these three systems revolutionise the roundabout design workflow by creating a single roundabout model that updates dynamically and in real time. The result is a seamlessly linked system in which changes made in any of the three programs are immediately reflected in the other two.
For the first time... a roundabout modelled in 3D with real-time capacity analysis!

Geometric design of roundabouts in AutoTrack® Junctions
AutoTrack® lets you design roundabouts to built-in national standards. By applying established geometric rules it takes the monotony out of constructing a roundabout model and allows the user to concentrate on getting the design right. Editing the roundabout is made even easier by the extensive use of grips which let the user adjust the geometry graphically and make the process highly intuitive with immediate visual feedback of any problems. Using AutoTrack® Junctions you can calculate the complete geometry compliant with the selected standard, place pedestrian crossings, rumble strips, speed striping, calculate fastest path radii & speeds, and output design and analysis reports. Vehicle swept paths created using AutoTrack® snap to valid roundabout routes and are dynamically updated as the geometry changes.
Linked to traffic capacity / delay analysis in ARCADY
The Junctions module has been developed in close collaboration with TRL (the UK's Transport Research Laboratory) and links dynamically to their industry standard ARCADY® program. The link allows AutoTrack® to pass geometric data to ARCADY® which in turn passes back capacity and delay data in real time. These values, along with other critical analysis values such as fastest line speed and entry radius, are displayed in easy to read panels on the roundabout in AutoTrack® allowing the designer to monitor the performance of the roundabout as the geometry is adjusted. Using ARCADY® you can calculate capacity, delays, queues, saturation levels, level of service and accident rates.
Now, it takes just minutes to model, analyse and cost alternative ‘what-if' scenarios
Linked to surface modelling in AutoCAD® Civil 3D®
The system runs in AutoCAD, MicroStation or stand-alone but users running AutoTrack® in AutoCAD® Civil 3D® can expect further benefits. AutoTrack® now creates the alignments necessary to construct the corridor and surface model in Civil 3D®. Again, the link is dynamic and bi-directional so once the model has been created, the corridor updates with changes made in AutoTrack® and the roundabout model in AutoTrack® reacts to changes made to the roadway model in Civil 3D®. Civil 3D® creates a complete 3D model of the site and thus allows the user to model the road construction, grading, land requirement, cut and fill, surface water and drainage, services provision and ultimately construction cost.
A single change to a kerb alignment can now be costed in seconds!
Mark Johnson of MTJ Engineering, leading US roundabout designers based in Madison, Wisconsin, says of the system, ‘We're evaluating the software now, based on what I saw in Carmel. I was very encouraged to see what the combination of AutoTrack, ARCADY and Civil 3D could do for analyzing ‘what-if' scenarios'.
